Spend Black History Month in South Central

Fill up your calendar with Black heritage in Wichita

February is a month full of things to do and days to celebrate. This month, South Central Kansas wants to focus on how to celebrate Black History Month in Wichita. Adventure out to learn about Black heritage and explore local businesses.

First stop, food

Start your day by grabbing a bite to eat. There are plenty of Black-owned restaurants to try in Wichita, the Heart of the Country. For the best soul food, make a stop at Crig’s To-Go. For barbecue lovers, Georgio’s II BBQ hits the spot every time. Wash it down at Simply Sangria with locally-made wine, and don’t forget dessert at Magnolia Sweet Shoppe or Wichita Cheesecake Company

Wait, where’s the history? 

The Kansas African American Museum is filled with Black history and culture. Check out art reflecting the African American life, special exhibitions, and educational events. Head over to Ambassador Hotel Autograph Collection which sits where the original Dockum Drug Store Sit-In took place. Which was one of the first efforts in the nation to end segregation in Wichita. Visit other Wichita museums, such as the Kansas Aviation Museum, to discover Black aviators.

There are so many things to do in Wichita, be sure to shop at Black-owned businesses. Lola’s Candle Company is one of the only places you can make your own scented candle. Pick up home décor and apparel at The Blackprint and step up your shoe game at Knockout Sneaker Boutique. Then head to 2Beatz Boutique for trendy clothing and accessories.

Join Injoy Fountain, who you may know from the 17th season of “The Voice,” when she sings karaoke at Vorshay’s Cocktail Lounge. There are many great ways to celebrate Black History Month in Wichita. Be sure to explore other February events to fill up your calendar.
